KERALAN CUISINE

The cuisine that inspires White Peppers Menu originates from Kerala which is located in the beautiful southwestern coastal region of India. Surrounded by the sea, Kerala is the home to numerous vegetarian and non-vegetarian lip-smacking dishes. Peppercorns, Turmeric, Ginger, Chillies, Curry leaves, Coconut, Mustard seeds and cinnamon are some of the most frequently used spices in Keralan cuisine.

 BRIEF HISTORY OF KERALA

Kerala is a state in south India. The name Kerala translates to "The Land of Coconut", Kera meaning coconut in the native language. It's also known as the Land of Spices because of the abundance of spices and medicinal plants that are grown there including Peppercorn. One can trace the origins of the trade of peppercorns back to the region of Kerala, from where it journeyed across the Arabian sea from the Malabar coast to the Early Roman Empire on 120 ships annually, for many people at that time, Peppercorns were too expensive and seen as a delicacy due to its scarcity. This problem was solved in the 15th Century when The King John II of Portuguese sent a reputed sailor named Vasco Da Gama on a mission to find a sea route to India. Thus, Gama became the first European to discover the first sea route to the North Coast of Kerala, which opened the rest of the world to exotic spices including peppercorns and cinnamon.
